Chardonnay is a variety which invites many complex activities. Each of the things we do such as barrel ferment, stirring on lees etc produces a richer and more complex wine. This wine has a restrained fragrance of figs and ripe melons combining beautifully with a delicious mouthfilling savouriness and acidity that comes from truly cool climate grapes.
This is another gem in the long line of Cabernets that have come off our property. At a recent retrospective tasting going back to the 1984 vintage there was not one wine that embarrassed; naturally some vintages were better than others.
This wine walks the middle ground between being fruit driven and more complex and structured. The contributing clones are 114 and 115, MV6, D2V5 and D5V12. Each brings unique character to the wine. There is a faint but appealing sappy character that has nothing to do with stems in the ferment, but more to do with the berry size at maturity, ie small. The texture is rich and structured with soft tannins and a good acid finish.
This wine shows all of the classic 'Gris' characters both on the nose and in the mouth. Its vibrant yet savoury aromatics of musk and spice are matched seamlessly on the palate by textural flavours of pears and lemon juice. Although this wine will undoubtedly drink well for 3 to 4 years we recommend it is enjoyed sooner rather than later.
This Fume Blanc style is a beguiling wine that brings a new dimension to Sauvignon in our wine line up. Essentially it seeks to capture a smoky minerality with both texture and length, and in our view succeeds. Although fermented in 20% of new oak barrels the wood component is so subdued as to simply provide a background note to a very complex wine. Great drinking now or within the next four to five years.
